Thinking about 2011

In less than two hours 2010 will be over,  it has been a tough year for many people. I cannot say that it has been a very rewarding year financially, but today I did come up with a list of moments which made my year.

We are finishing the year on a good weather note.  New Year's Eve we saw some folks walking the beach in bare feet.  Last weekend if they had tried that, they would have gotten a case of frostbite.

As we drove around Swansboro earlier in the day, I saw a kayaker out in the marshes on the other side of the Intracoastal Waterway.  There were also plenty of empty boat trailers at the Wildlife Resources Ramp in Cedar Point.  Warm weather even just in the fifties can get people thinking about getting on the water.

There are some signs that 2011 is going to be a little better year than 2009. Many of the economic indicators are beginning to trend up slightly.  Certainly in the real estate world, I think we might see a little better time, but it could easily be derailed.  A lot depends on jobs.  If people start getting jobs, they will start buying homes.

We are seeing some people who are finally tired of waiting to find that retirement home.  The Crystal Coast is still a great spot to retire.  Even this most recent December was much nicer here on the coast than it was in interior North Carolina.  Our friends in Boston just endured a blizzard and a Nor'easter that was close to a category 2 hurricane.

Besides wishing for a better year in real estate and more jobs for everyone, I am counting on continued good health for our family.  Your health is as important as it gets. If you don't feel good, it is hard to be happy.  A good part of our health is related to our life style. My wife and I will continue working on our new style of eating which has helped us drop almost one hundred pounds between the two of us in the last nine months.

We have done well maintaining many of the lifestyle changes that we made earlier in 2010.  There was a scale on the table tonight when we had our New Year's Eve steak.  We had sweet potatoes and salad to accompany it.

Along with eating right, we hope to continue walking as often as possible.  I am looking forward to getting back on my bike and to launching the kayak as the weather warms.

Then there is fishing.  This year, I really hope to have the time to devote to fishing so I can have a great year.  Everything conspired against fishing in 2010 from the extreme heat and winds in the summer to the 20.25 inches of rain we got in September.

If the weather will cooperate at all tomorrow, I plan to take the boat out for a New Year's Day boat ride.  It would be a good way to start the year off right.
